This lovely 1920s niello silver chain is likely of French origin, and features stylish curb links: the pattern is one niello link followed by two smaller silver links. Niello is a black mixture of silver, copper and lead sulphides, which in this case has been is inlayed onto the silver base links. The technique is said to have been invented by the ancient Egyptians, and spread throughout Europe as far back as the late Iron Age.
